Before You Leave Thailand
Electrical appliances
The electricity supply in the UK is 230 volts with a frequency of 50 Hertz which is similar to that in Thailand (220/50). However, many universities do not allow equipment purchased outside the UK to be used in halls of residence. Indeed some even ban the use of adaptor plugs. Plugs used in the UK are 3 pin and usually fused. If you have a notebook computer / mobile phone and so on with an external adapter it is usually easy to buy a plug / lead in the UK that will fit your adapter. An approved lead will be stamped BS1363 and be fitted with a moulded 3 pin plug
TV Licences
You will need a licence is required if you own or rent a television set. The licence for a colour TV costs £135.50 and the licence for a black and white TV costs £45.50. These can be bought at the Post Office. There are heavy fines for people caught using a TV without a valid licence. If you do not wish to pay for the licence all at once, you can pay monthly by direct debit. For more information see: www.tvlicensing.co.uk
Insurance
We recommend that you to take out travel insurance to cover your journey to your university in the UK. Your insurance should cover delays, medical emergencies and the cost of replacing any of your belongings lost during your travels.
Healthcare
International students on a course of six months or more full-time study and all EU students from countries with a reciprocal health agreement, along with any dependants (husband, wife and/or children) are entitled to free medical care under the National Health Service (NHS). Friends or family who decide to visit you will not be able to access NHS medical care unless they enter the country for six months or more. Anyone who enters the UK as a visitor for less than six months must have private medical insurance which extends to cover the UK. Dental treatment, spectacles (glasses) and some other services are available privately with some financial assistance from the NHS. You will have the opportunity to register with the NHS when you arrive at the University.
